October Awareness Campaign

By November 5, 2018 January 2nd, 2019 Advocacy

The month of October was blind awareness month, and there were two special days within the month that brought attention to topics related to the visually impaired and blind community. The first day – which happened on October 6th – was National Blind Sports Day. National Blind Sports Day was founded by the United States Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) and is purposed to promote or raise awareness of blind and adaptive sports. The second day was White Cane Safety Day, which occurred on October 15th. The day revolves around bringing awareness to the visually impaired and blind community and educating people on this white cane that many visually impaired and blind individuals use to navigate.

Our goals surrounding National Blind Sports Day and White Cane Safety Day were to educate people about both days and to use the days as a means to bring attention to the visually impaired and blind community. The channel we promoted National Blind Sports Day and White Cane Safety Day was through our Facebook page. Fore White Cane Safety Day, in particular, we posted two fun facts about the day: One fact stated that President Lyndon Johnson was the one who officially announced October 15th as White Cane Safety Day, and the other fact stated the mission of White Cane Safety Day. We also dedicated posts for both days to notify any onlookers and followers of our page that the days were coming up and we posted the days of for each awareness day about those days being National Blind Sports Day and White Cane Safety Day.
